Bowie/Collector auctions, Sotheby’s London
The three part sale of works from the private collection of legendary musician David Bowie included over 350 works. Many of the most important British artists of the 20th century were represented in the collection, including such luminaries as Graham Sutherland, Henry Moore, Frank Auerbach and Damien Hirst. Bowie’s eclectic collection also featured works by the Surrealists, Outsider artists, Contemporary African artists, as well as famous designers such as Ettore Sottsass and the Memphis Group. The exhibition took place in Sotheby’s New Bond Street galleries, and was a once in a lifetime opportunity for pop fans, art lovers and collectors to immerse themselves in the extraordinary range of creative work that fed Bowie’s imagination. A vast amount of marketing material was created, including a print catalogue for each part of the Auction.
Parts I and II covered Modern and Contemporary Art, while Part III featured Design. Over 20,000 copies of the print catalogue were distributed. There were 156,000 visits to e-catalogues.
Under my direction the Creative team delivered extensive marketing collateral to promote the auction. 5 weekend talks streamed live on Facebook were viewed over 155,000 times. The pre-sale videos created were viewed over 170,000 times. The London exhibition was a huge success. There were 51,000 visitors, the highest attendance for any pre-sale exhibition in London with thousands of people taking part online.
